Germanium dioxide
GeO₂ is well known as a catalyst in the production of PET plastics. It is also the basis for red phosphors and for the production of bismuth germanate crystals.

Germanium tetrachloride

GeCl₄ is used as a doping material for the core of optical fibres. Germanium residues, produced by the optical fibre industry are returned to Umicore for recycling
